When his father is killed in a tragic accident, a teenage farm-boy must give up his hedonistic lifestyle and find ways of financially supporting, and caring for, his seven-year-old sister.

A naive middle-aged gardener, a foundling who has never been beyond the boundary-wall of his patron’s house, is thrown out into the world when the old man dies. His many years spent
either gardening or watching television help him towards a fortuitous social and political elevation.

An enquiring young woman changes lovers, from writer to stockbroker. But an underlying lack of engagement is emphasised by the brutalist architecture of the setting in a Fascist Roman suburb, itself a major element of the film.
