The Botanical World of Mary Delany

With just coloured paper, scissors and glue, Mary Delany transformed ordinary materials into extraordinary, inspirational artworks. Explore their intricate detail through this new photographic display of her exquisite collages. In partnership with the British Museum, presented inside the Dunham Massey Orangery and surrounded by the historic gardens.

Discover the pioneering technique of this eighteenth-century artist, whose ‘paper mosaicks’ were celebrated as scientifically accurate botanical specimens. The visually stunning images reveal Delany's incredible precision, as well as the delicacy and skill that Delany employed throughout her impressive body of work, which she only began at the age of 72.

Surrounded by real blooms and living foliage, visitors are invited to experience her artworks in a context that mirrors the botanical world that inspired them, creating a powerful dialogue between art and nature, past and present.

From the Orangery you can see the 18th century country home of the Grey family. Step inside to explore the connection between Mary Delany and Henrietta, Countess of Stamford. In the Reading Room, view a selection of fascinating objects revealing shared interests and inspiration.

The presentation of this exhibition is a collaboration between the British Museum and Dunham Massey, National Trust.
